Another domain, the development approach and life cycle performance, addresses activities and functions associated with the development approach, cadence and life cycle phase of the project.
What is the development approach? It’s the means used to create and evolve the product, service, or result during the project life cycle and there are different approaches. On top of that, different industries may use different terms to refer to the same development approach. In the end, there are three: predictive, hybrid and adaptive. When you effectively execute this performance domain, you will get results such as consistent project deliverables, a project life cycle consisting of phases that connect the delivery of business and stakeholder value from the beginning to the end of the project and the project life cycle consisting of phases that facilitate the delivery cadence required to produce the project deliverables.
As we get into this domain, there are several definitions that you should know and will come up:
● Deliverable: any unique and verifiable product, result, or capability to perform a service that is required to be produced to complete a process, phase or project
● Development approach: a method used to create and evolve the product, service, or result during the project life cycle, such as a predictive, iterative, incremental, adaptive, or hybrid method.
● Cadence: a rhythm activities conducted throughout the project
● Project phase: a collection of logically related project activities that culminates in the completion of one or more deliverables
● Project life cycle: the series of phases that a project passes through from its start to its completion
When we speak about delivery cadence, which is the timing and frequency of the project deliverables, projects can have a single delivery, multiple deliveries, or periodic deliveries.
Single deliveries means exactly what it says, it has a single delivery at the end of the project. For example, you may deliver a web banner at the end of a project.
Multiple deliveries of a project are delivered at different times throughout the project. So think of building a house. You have to find and purchase the land, that is one delivery. Getting permits to build the house is another delivery, then building the house is another delivery, so on and so on. Note that not all project deliverables need to be in sequential order. Periodic deliveries are kind of like multiple deliveries but they are on a fixed delivery schedule. Think of a software sprint. You may make updates every two weeks and release it to the public once a quarter.
There is another sneaky delivery option called continuous delivery. These are typical in technology dev projects because they continuously deliver feature increments immediately to customers. More often through small batches of work or automation. Think about the apps that always ask for you to update because in the backend, the developers are constantly making updates to the app and as soon as it’s ready to deploy, they do it.
That is your PMP in a Snap. We’ll see you again next week.
